Oaxaca

I was fortunate to visit Oaxaca again this past Fall with my amazing mother. Though this was a short & sweet trip, I wanted to pull together some of my top highlights to show just how much you can do in a short weekend!

Places To Stay

  • Hotel Las Mariposas: affordable, comfortable and cute with complimentary breakfast. They offer suites at a very fair price which is great if you’re staying a bit longer and want your own small kitchen set-up!

  • Selina: New chain of global hostels who know what Millennials are looking for in travel- affordable, aesthetic, and a place to co-work from! Selina’s Oaxaca location is smack dab in the middle of the historic downtown and the interior is full of beautiful art. If you don’t stay here, still keep a lookout for their events.

  • Grand Fiesta Americana: Luxe, modern take on the Oaxacan aesthetic at a still reasonable price (coming from the US!). Has a nice bar, restaurant and pool as well.

Places To Eat

There are of course 1,000,000 incredible places to eat in Oaxaca City so these are just a few extra special or worthwhile places.

  • Levadura De Olla: Absolutely incredibly unique experience. Book ahead for the “cena en leña” or fireside dinner which is a table side personal feast for you and your small party at an incredibly affordable price. Do not miss this. Breakfast lunch and dinner are all amazing.

  • Ilegal Mezcal: if you’ve visited them in Antigua, Guatemala or NYC then you know how awesome these people are. Worth a visit.

  • Ancestral: A nice walk through a cool neighborhood brings you to this mostly outdoor restaurant with fantastic food and cocktails.

  • Zandunga: Amazing cocktails and food from the Isthmus. Everything we had was fantastic.

  • Mercado Central: full of traditional food stalls and mini restaurants. Authentic and delicious.

  • Calabacitas Tiernas: Vegan restaurant, bookstore and boutique

Places To Shop

  • Sara Almeraya: Hand embroidered denim and cool jewelry.

  • Corredor Central shops: several cute shops next to Sara Almeraya

  • Gasa: wonderful local designer with mix of heritage and modern designs.

  • Corazón de Guaje: Great art gallery

  • Zapotec rug vendors & weaving villages

Places To Visit

  • Jardin Botánico: central Oaxaca city, full of beautiful plants and really nicely done.

  • Jacobo & Maria Ángeles workshop to take the tour of their Alebrije making

  • Hierve El Agua: amazing natural formation and swimming area. Many tours visit here.
